Ritual
is important in our everyday humdrum lives. No ritual of any kind is
complete without its own incense. Artio at PeacockAngel creates
bespoke, specifically designed incense for whatever your purpose. Gathering
together the exotic ingredients can be difficult, time consuming and
expensive if you have to buy minimum quantities. Around the world
since the dawn of time incense recipes have been passed down the
generations with their formulas a closely guarded secret. We will provide
small bags of most incense blends, based on these most ancient of trade
secrets, made on the right days at the correct time.*Incense, used properly, can give forth a mysterious essence which penetrates and influences the deeper emotions of the subconscious. Ancient civilisations understood this well, for the smoke of incense was an important part of life, religion, and the celebration of the Mysteries. Perfume has been used in the form of incense for at least 5000 years. In Latin the word perfume means through smoke and incensum to set on fire. In Japanese, the phrase for attuning oneself complete to fragrances translates to 'listening to incense', which is a phrase it is worth bearing in mind. Fumigations not only served to sweeten the air but were believed to give protection from evil and disease. Most importantly they were an offering to the Gods; these spiritual essences were sent to them on the wings of sacred smoke. Their magical power is stored in the ingredients used and released when they are burnt. Your prayers are carried to the spirit realm through the burning of incense. Incense was thought to support the soul in its ascent to heaven. Ancient altars sent forth billows of aromatic smoke filling the temples with intoxicating fragrance lifting the hearts of the worshippers and carrying their prayers to the sky. Each waft of smoke contains the energy of the earth, the sun, the rain, the wind, the stars, the moon and the sky. A day without incense is a day lost was an ancient Egyptian saying. *From the forthcoming book Sacred Smoke
